In my studies I have discovered that before WW2 there were two types of Jews in Europe. German Jews and the rest. German Jews were Germans first and foremast. Judaism was secondary. They considered Judaism as a German tribe such as the Teutons that made up Germany. Many but not all American and Canadian Jews now-a-days feel the same way. I am a Canadian first and foremost and I think you feel the same way about being American even if you guys have to practice your hockey more. Then there are the matzoh throwers. Other European Jews mocked the German Jews behind there backs. "Yiech bin Deitch". Why? Because other Jews in Poland Russia etc were Jews first and never considered themselves more than Jews that happened to be living in a hostile country. "Next year in Jerusalem" was a fervent prayer and did not mean for a vacation either. Jews had freedom in Germany and they flourished. Long before there was a Jew in a North American Government there were two Jews in Bismarck's cabinet. D'Israeli was a convert to Christianity. I have read of German Jews that committed suicide during the Holocaust over their rejection as Germans. Jews were 1% of Germany and Austria but of 9 of their Nobel Prize winners before 1939 in Physiology and Medicine 6 were Jews. 75% of Vienna's physicians were Jews. Vienna was the epi-center of Modern medicine. By the way. German Jews looked down on the other Jews.
