No, I am not Jewish, but I care
Quick thought on how President Bush can insist that Arafat be replaced. His comment is not a mandate, but, rather, it is tied to the kind of help the US can / might be willing to provide. We are under no obligation to provide resources, especially blood, to people who seek to harm us. It is a simple fact of reality that if Arafat is replaced by someone more reasonable, the American people are likely to be more open to providing more and better resources than if Arafat, or anyone like him, remains in charge. While it may sound like a mandate, I view President Bush's statement as a communication "around Arafat" to the larger body of the Palestinian people. If Arafat and the terrorist butchers are standing in the way of substantive help, those folks have the right to know that. At the risk of over staying my welcome, it seems that the Palestinians are much more diverse than most references would seem to suggest. While the lip service for the terrorists is a mile wide, I suspect it is only an inch or two deep. The individuals active in prosecuting the terrorist agenda appear (to me at any rate) to be less than 2% of the total population. While the "targets" of the terrorism these past 2 years are clearly Israelis, Jews and Americans, in any combination, the "objective" of the butchers is to re- establish the sinecure that less than 2% group seems to have over the other 98%. Two years ago that 98% was excited about the possibilities of a negotiated peace, or so it has been reported.
